Volunteers Help Our School Thrive

The PTA would like to extend an enormous thank you to all our volunteers.  Whether you work in the classroom, tutor, volunteer on a committee or for an event—you name it—we can’t do it without you.  For this, we thank you. Part of what makes Lawton a successful school is the tremendous amount of family involvement.

How Do I Volunteer? Who Can Volunteer?

If you plan on volunteering at any time during the year, you must complete a volunteer application form. Even if you have volunteered at Lawton before, you need to fill out a new application each year

SPS has partnered with VolunteerLocal to make filling out forms a little easier.  You are now able to fill out forms for your background check and forms for chaperoning field trips ONLINE!  Make sure to complete all sections, or it may delay your approval.

What are Some Volunteer Opportunities?

WEEKEND FOOD FOR KIDS PROGRAM

Would you like to help make sure Lawton students in need have food on the weekends?! This is the volunteer position for you! We are looking for volunteers available Thursday mornings to pick up food bags from Ballard Food Bank and to bring them back to Lawton's main office, where the food bags will be distributed to student backpacks for the weekend. If interested, please email Sandra McElearney at slove315@gmail.com.

DIE-CUTTING MACHINE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Do you have an electronic die-cutting machine (ex. Cricut or Silhouette)?  Kristina and Annette, our main office secretaries would love a parent volunteer (or ten!) who would be willing to cut letters for bulletin board titles throughout the year as requested. It's a time consuming task having to use their hand-crank machine, which limits them to only one font. Please email Kristina Cerise at kmcerise@seattleschools.org if you are interested in helping out.

PTA COMMITTEE CHAIRS AND CO-CHAIRS NEEDED

Without volunteers, we cannot offer these valuable events and programs. We really can't do this without YOU!  The following committees need Chairs or Co-Chairs. Members for each committee will be recruited at the Back To School Bash (September 14).

ART DOCENT:  Chair Position Filled

BINGO NIGHT:  Chair Position Filled

FALL KINDERGARTEN SOCIAL: Chair or Co-Chairs will help plan crafts, food, and entertainment for the event scheduled in October. This event is for Kindergarten families.

SPRING ART AUCTION: Chair or Co-Chairs will work with former the former chair to help plan the event scheduled on March 22, 2019. The Spring Art Auction is a great Lawton community event where we come together to celebrate all of the amazing classroom art created by teachers, kids, and parent volunteers. There are always great parties, vacations, and activities to bid on too!

MOVE-A-THON:  Co-Chairs will work with the current chair to learn how to plan the event scheduled on May 17, 2019.  Move-A-Thon is a day devoted to fun, fitness, and tasty treats. Kids spend 60 minutes during the day with their classrooms completing as many laps around the upper field as they can while listening to their favorite music.

YEARBOOK:  Chair or Co-Chairs will work with student helpers to create the Lawton yearbook, which is distributed in June. Pictures need to be collected from each class throughout the academic year.

5TH GRADE PROMOTION: Chair or Co-Chairs will work with a team of 4th grade parents to help plan this special night for the 5th graders and their families, which is scheduled during the last week of school in June.

If you are interested in finding out the many various ways you can volunteer at or for Lawton or if you already have an event in mind, please contact Mikelle Nuwer at mikellenuwer@gmail.com to learn more. Volunteering in the classroom is coordinated by the classroom teachers and room parents.

Volunteer needs also are also posted in the newsletter throughout the year.
