Help your child be ready for school. Any Lawton student can walk with leaders and friends on a Walking Wednesday or Fuel Free Friday walking school bus. Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a good source of information about the benefits of walking to school. Most kids and families look to walking as energizing, refreshing, good for the environment, safe and especially fun!
The gist: kids walk safely to school on a prescribed route with at least one or more Volunteers.
When: Every Wednesday and Friday all year. Check the routes and route schedule shown below. Join the start of a walking bus at 7:20 (Dravus and 34th) or 7:30 (all other routes.) Or, join wherever and whenever you see a group walking by. The leaders will be wearing bright yellow vests that say “Lawton Walking School Bus” on the back. Many parents even drive to a route and leave their kids with friends. Then they don't even have to worry about the Lawton drop-off zone.
Where: Detailed information is provided in this Route Map. Please be sure to wait for the leader to arrive before leaving your child along the route.
Safety: Students who walk on a Walking School Bus need to agree to abide by our safety rules. Please read the attached card . Don't worry about handing it in, but basically, dress appropriately, walk safely, and listen to the adults. Thank you for being safe!
Volunteer: If you are interested in being a regular volunteer and walking one of the routes on a regular basis, please click here to email Lyon Terry or call him at (206) 252-2160. Thank you!
Have a great time, and thanks for driving safely around the Lawton! There will be students walking.
